PJ Harvey & John Parish
When alt-rock queenie PJ Harvey and her longtime collaborator John Parish performed in March at Irving Plaza, Ms. Polly Jean seemed as though a weight had been lifted (or maybe it was just her last album's zither). Sure, she's cackled, howled, and chortled at concerts for years, but as evidenced on their new album together, A Woman a Man Walked By, playing with taciturn guitarist Parish allows Harvey to focus even more on her sometimes lilting, sometimes terrifying vocals to great effect. Plus, it's always refreshing to hear a set of non-standards from her.
