PJ Harvey & John Parish
Before PJ Harvey began writing her own sultry, anxious, zeitgeist-defining declarations of independence, she played in the rather unprovocative, well-adjusted, sort-of-derivative late-80s Bristol, England, alt-pop group Automatic Dlamini (a band she incidentally begged to play her 18th birthday party; they didnt). John Parish fronted 'em. This year, Harvey turns 40 and is releasing her second album with Parish as a bylined collaborator, following up 1996s excellent (and solo Harvey-like) Dance Hall at Louse Point. Judging from Black Hearted Love, the first single from new disc A Woman a Man Walked By, the journey continues to pay off.
