When the late Swedish photographer Christer Strömholm came to Paris at the end of the 1950s, he settled in Place Blanche (home of the Moulin Rouge) and, for a decade, befriended and documented the area’s transsexual street hustlers. Christer Strömholm: Les Amies de Place Blanche at the International Center of Photography features 40 stunning black-and-white photos, historical publications, and ephemera from those years. Said Strömholm about his subjects in 1983: “It was then—and still is—about obtaining the freedom to choose one’s own life and identity.”
Mondays-Sundays, 10 a.m. Starts: May 25. Continues through Sept. 2, 2012
