Randy Weston African Rhythms Sextet
There's something imperial about the way the 83-year-old pianist addresses his instrument, like all those keys are his loyal subjects willing to do his bidding on a moment's notice. That's the source of his music's authority; its beauty stems from the room Weston's ensemble gives each riff and each rhythm. Tempo is key with this band; his classics, such as "Blue Moses" or "African Sunrise," move at their own pace, always glancing around to account for unexpected ideas that crop up. The addition of drummer Lewis Nash will only enhance that graceful vibe.
