Even though his last album, the breakthrough XXX, remains available as a free download on label Fool’s Good website, the music of Danny Brown, one-third of tonight’s bill, is rooted in his hometown of Detroit. Take the song “Scrap or Die.” Who else but a rapper from the Motor City would flip Jeezy’s “Trap or Die” from a song about selling drugs to one about salvaging copper pipes from abandoned buildings? Meanwhile, for better or for worse, headliner A$AP Rocky reps Harlem but grabs flows from Texas and beats from Clams Casino’s Mediafire account (better), and opener Flatbush Zombies make rap that has yet to cross over far beyond their Tumblr homepage (worse).
