Othello features perhaps the most moving song in the Shakespeare canon, Desdemona’s “Willow.” So perhaps it’s no surprise that the tragedy has inspired so many musical adaptations, from jazz to funk and, now, hip-hop. The Public Lab presents Venice, with music by Matt Sax and Curtis Moore and lyrics by Sax and Eric Rosen, based on the travails of the celebrated Moor. (Rosen and Sax’s previous credits include the LCT3 hit, Clay, a one-man hip-hop show based on Henry IV.) Set not too far in the future, the script concerns “a young man’s rise as he fights for what’s right against a backdrop of deceit and sibling betrayal.” Rosen directs an ace cast including Jennifer Damiano, Leslie Odom Jr., and Claybourne Elder.
