RECESSIONISM EXPRESSIONISM

It has become common practice during these hard times for art museums to run exhibitions culled from their own recession-proof collections, rather than pay big bucks to borrow great international works. The Museum of Modern Art is no exception. Curators dug around in storage to unearth more than 3,000 examples of the early-20th-century modernist movement centered in Germany and Austria, where artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Emil Nolde, and Käthe Kollwitz explored sexuality, spirituality, and, of course, war. About 250 of these prints are on display in German Expressionism: The Graphic Impulse, an exhibition surveying the social and aesthetic movement of the time.
