The alto saxophonist and co-leader of the Indo-Pak Coalition returns to familiar territory with a reconstituted quartet, replacing the piano chair with guitarist David "Fuze" Fiuczynski, ax-wielding overlord of funk outfit Screaming Headless Torsos and Mahanthappa's cohort in legendary drummer Jack DeJohnette's current group. This project, "Gamak," melds the quarter-tone harmonies of South Indian ragas with jazz, a Carnatic fusion reminiscent of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Fans of earlier quartet releases Black Water and Mother Tongue might do well to bring a flak jacket. Fuze takes no prisoners when he cocks his custom double-neck Fuzeblaster, and that's when he's in a good mood.
