'Skirl Party VI'
Chris Speed and his Brooklyn buds are making their DIY moves stick; each new release on the Skirl imprint boasts a singular approach. Tyft finds guitarist Hilmar Jensson pan-frying shards of riffs while three horns blow antsy nü-bop lines above. The groups drummer, Jim Black, leads the Speed and Jensson-driven Alas No Axis, whose new Houseplant is deft enough at dynamic curves to wax dreamy one moment, destructo the next. Balancing all this rock attitude are the delicate abstractions of Mary Halvorson and Jessica Pavone, whose guitar and violin allow Pomo etudes to flinch and flutter with equal aplomb.
