Volleyball dates back to 1895, when a Massachusetts YMCA instructor took parts of tennis and handball and put people on an indoors court to play “mintonette.” A hugely popular participant sport across the world, volleyball became an Olympic event in 1924, and beach volleyball got its sanction for the big games in 1996. The problems with playing volleyball in New York can be finding and joining a team and waiting for a court, but the folks at Big City Volleyball have something for anyone who wants to play. Coming up for intermediate to advanced players are the weekly Saturday open-play sessions (currently scheduled through May 19).
