STAY UP LATE
An all-night concert is the most authentic place to experience Indian classical music, say connoisseurs. The Chhandayan organization has been delivering the real deal to New Yorkers annually for 12 years, and nothing quite compares to surrendering oneself to the meditative, dazzlingly virtuosic, and almost inevitable dream-like pleasures of this unique dusk-to-dawn experience. This years edition focuses on some exceptional younger talents, including (in order of appearance) singer Sanjeev Abhyankar, an award-winning Bollywood playback singer; sarod player Alam Khan, son of the legendary Ali Akbar Khan; singer Kaushiki Chakrabarty, daughter of Ajoy Chakrabarty; and sitarist Shujat Khan, son of Vilayat Khan. These players have spacious shoes to fill in a field where mere adequacy doesnt cut it. Theyll be seeking musical transcendence amid the citys most discerning audience, and chances are theyll find it.
