Dir. Akira Kurosawa (1949).
Set in a post-war Japan still under American rule, this drama is a gripping character study as much as a crime drama. It stars the superb Toshio Mifune, who with Kurosawa formed one of the greatest actor-director teams in the history of cinema, as a rookie cop, obsessed with recovering the gun stolen from him that had been used in a robbery and a murder.
