St. Ann’s Warehouse of DUMBO is known for its rallying support of innovative and experimental projects, and its Puppet Lab is an incubator for interdisciplinary works of puppet and object theater. Over the course of the year, Lab Directors Matt Acheson and Krissy Smith oversee the development of new collaborations between puppeteers, writers, composers, and other creatives, culminating in LABAPALOOZA!, a massive presentation of the finalized shows. This year’s festival includes an adaptation of Gulliver’s Travels, an opera inspired by the hallucinations of a German nun, the tale of an adulterous fox performed by troubadours with shadow puppets, and a retelling of the natural philosophy movement as portrayed through the life of Charles Darwin. The eclectic lineup draws upon influences as wide-ranging as Japanese bunraku puppetry, jazz music, and digital media. Curious adults and precocious children (St. Ann’s recommends bringing only young ’uns 10 and older) can surely find something to their taste — if their taste favors puppets.
