Red Hook Flicks, the neighborhood’s
annual summer movie series, returns
tonight with a slate of eight films that will be screened weekly—and free of charge—throughout July and August. The festival’s appeal is inextricable from its environment: all films are shown outdoors and at night in Red Hook’s Valentino Pier, which boasts a splendid view of the Statue of Liberty. Of course, it doesn’t hurt when the beauty of the setting is matched by that of the film itself, as is the case with Paris Is Burning (screening on August 5) and the location-appropriate On the Waterfront (August 26). Another strong entry is tonight’s series-opening selection, Richard Linklater’s 1993 Dazed and Confused, featuring a marvelous cast of then-unknowns, including Ben Affleck, Renée Zellweger, Parker Posey, and, of course, the now ubiquitous Matthew McConaughey.
