Some days Cindy Sherman is a career girl, some days she’s an erotic centerfold, and some days she’s a clown. But the one constant is that she’s always fascinating. Cindy Sherman’s latest retrospective at MOMA features more than 170 photographs in which we can see her amazing progression and transformation as an artist through the multitude of characters she has inhabited over the past three decades. Acting as her own model, hair and makeup artist, photographer, and director of set design, Sherman carefully molds a scene and leaves us to create the narrative. The show includes everything from her groundbreaking “Untitled Film Stills” (1977–80)—which examined female stereotypes in films from the ’50s and ’60s—to her exploration of aging society ladies in 2008, as well as never-before-seen photographic murals.
Mondays-Sundays, 10 a.m. Starts: Feb. 26. Continues through June 11, 2012
