Is there any underrated '90s band with more indie cred than Chapel Hill's Superchunk? The founders of Merge Records, guitarist Mac McCaughan and bassist Laura Ballance literally did it themselves, jump-starting an equitable and profitable label while garnering acclaim for their pogo-jumping slacker rock. (No Pocky For Kitty, anyone?) Though the band's been in remission since 2001's aptly named Here's To Shutting Up, two recent EPs and frequent live appearances have started the North Carolina rumor mill brewing. Here's hoping 2009 is the year of the Chunk. With Versus.
