Dir. Bob Fosse (1969). Fosse's debut as film director was this adaptation of the Broadway musical based on Fellini's Nights of Cabiria. Its heroine, a "dance-hall hostess" with a heart of gold, is played by Shirley MacLaine in a somewhat over-studied portrayal. The "Big Spender" number is sure-fire. The production is handsome and plush. It adds up to a movie good enough for you to want it to be a lot better.
