The Bad Plus
One reason they don't get mixed up with fellow keys/bass/drums trio Medeski, Martin & Wood is because BP do more cover versions, drawing from classic rock, alt-rock, new wave, and yes, even some jazz. What sets them apart from novelty acts is that they don't play covers for laughs but for recontextualization. That means that rock fans can be self-satisfied in enjoying jazzbos recreating their favorite playlists, and jazzbos themselves can feel self-congratulatory about expanding their horizons. Or you can say "screw it" and just enjoy a solid genre-hopping band. With Wendy Lewis.
