The Bad Plus
Fanfare and flourish may be two of their strong suits, but the celebrated jazz trio with the pop music know-how has one truly signature element: propulsion. Whether they're in the middle of a fiery exclamation, or inching their way through a sumptuous ballad, there's a fierce forward motion at work. This year's Never Stop was a whirlwind of original pieces that illuminated their expertise with melody--check the addictive wobble of "Bill Hickman At Home" or the gleeful prog of "Beryl Loves to Dance"--and reminded us just how damn tight they are. Watch out for that special New Year's Eve pricing.
