The Ben Perowsky Quartet
If he can put some funky fluff behind Joan as Police Woman, update tunes from his summer camp youth, and splash it Blakey style with Uri Caine, then why not try a hand at Sgt. Pepper's "Within You, Without You"? Versatility is drummer Perowsky's signature, and his new Esopus Opus (Skirl) does a consummate zig-zag through oddball originals and classic rock chestnuts. Along the way, texture gets its due (all hail Ted Reichman's accordion) and improv is revealed as just another daily rituala way of keeping interested in life.
