(William Wyler, 1946). This ambitious three-hour picture became a massive hit and the recipient of seven Oscars, but although acutely observed, Wyler's movie is not much more than a conventional drama on the problems of service men attempting go adjust to life in post-war America, well-served by an all-star cast and Gregg Toland's ingenious deep-focus set-ups.
