The Big Trail

(Raoul Walsh, 1930). Made in a wide-screen process called “Grandeur,” Walsh's brilliantly directed film, shot on location in the Grand Tetons of Wyoming, is stunning in its pictorial beauty. Ordered by the studio to cut costs, Walsh decided to economize by casting an unknown actor in the lead. He tested a bit player—a prop man named Marion Morrison, who got the role, had his name changed—and John Wayne was born.
Wednesdays-Fridays, 1:30 p.m. Starts: July 23. Continues through July 25, 2008
