The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Dir. Robert Wiene (1919). One of the most inspired horror films ever made, and a key work in the history of film design, this expressionistic masterpiece, the first significant movie example of the style, concerns a side-show hypnotist who uses a somnambulist to carry out his murders. The sets are awesome; Conrad Veidt is superb as the sleepwalking killer.
