What's lacking in their design innovation is more than made up for in soloing gravitas. The mainstream elders who drive this outfit (Billy Harper, Eddie Henderson, Billy Hart, George Cables, and Cecil McBee) boast a muscular approach to the blues, and their physical attack on post-hard-bop architecture on Warriors has little problem rattling walls. Goosed by the brass and reeds of David Weiss and Craig Handy, they make their way to an ornery lyricism that sends a message: experience counts.
