The Cool World
(Shirley Clarke, 1963). Clarke's improvisational film (her second feature) centers on a young gang member in Harlem who learns a few things the hard way. Its story is less compelling than its account of the pressures of day-to-day ghetto lifeit was the first fiction feature to be shot entirely on location in Harlem.
