(Francis Ford Coppola, 1972). Coppola transformed a gangster drama into an American epic, changing the shape and direction of the genre by putting a family and family life at the center of things. Marlon Brando does an admirable job with the title role and salvaged his career with the performance. The picture earned ten Oscar nominations and saved Paramount which was practically bankrupt at the time.
