The Hidden Fortress
Dir. Akira Kurosawa (1958).
The director's first wide-screen picture, his lightest film, is set in the 16thcentury civil war period and concerns two greedy peasants, a dethroned princess on the run, a treasure of hidden gold, and a dashing hero played by the great Toshiro Mifune. George Lucas has made no secret of the fact that Kurosawa's film was a major influence on Star Wars.
