The Little Girl Who Sold the Sun
(Djibril Diop Mambety 1999). The last film completed by the talented Senegalese filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambety is an exercise in stylized neo-realism. This marketplace legend in which an indomitable crippled girl reinvents herself as a vender of the local newspaper (hence the title) is a bold, vibrant, and splashy 45 minutes with a wonderful percolating score by the filmmakers brother, Wasis Diop.
