The Seventh Seal
(Ingmar Bergman, 1957). His most iconic film, Bergman's visually striking medieval morality play, the work that gained him an international reputation, was inspired by a mural in the little Lutheran church where, as a child, he used to daydream while his father conducted the sermon. Max von Sydow gives a performance of a high order as the knight who returns from the Crusades to find his country at the mercy of plague and witch hunts.
