Dir. Gillo Pontecorvo (1957). Gillo Pontecorvos first featurea tale of struggling fisher folk on Italys Dalmation coastis an oddly glamorous tract. The director wanted to shoot in black and white and use non-actors; his producers demanded postcard color and imposed international stars Yves Montand and Alida Valli. Despite Pontecorvos tendency to over score each new dramatic development, the open ending justifies the term "operatic."
