Dir. Sidney Lumet (1978). This Motown remake of The Wizard of Oz turned out an uneven affair. Dorothy and her pals from rural Kansas move along to face the contemporary world and its hazards in New York. The cast is piquant (Lena Horne, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross) but oddly enough, they leave less of an impression than the first-rate effects and striking production design.
