There Was a Father
(Yasujiro Ozu, 1942). This exquisite film concerns a widowed father and his son who are separated when the father must relocate and the boy is sent to boarding school. Their moments of happiness together carry the shadow of impending loss. It's a key picture in the director's career--many critics feel that it is here that his mature period begins.
