Throne of Blood
Dir. Akira Kurosawa (1957). Kurosawa moves Macbeth to the slopes of Mount Fuji and the result is one of the best adaptations of Shakespeare into film. Richly visual, it departs from its source in a number of ways and is as much an original work as an adaptation. This dark, unique masterpiece stars superb Toshiro Mifune and employs compositional tableaux from the Noh drama. The stunning castle set is magnificent.
