Tinariwen+Omar Souleyman+Toubab Krewe
Looking like a TSA flunky's worst nightmare in his ubiquitous checkered keffiyeh and aviator shades, Syrian dabke star Omar Souleyman makes his United States debut following three tantalizing Sublime Frequencies releases and an endorsement from Björk. Wrapped in robes and headscarves of a different cut, Tuareg tribesmen Tinariwen evoke nomadic life in the Sahara desert through vamping electric guitars, entrancing handclaps, and delighted ululations. North Carolina's Toubab Krewe combine the pop and folk sounds of Mali with all-American surf, jazz, hip-hop, and improv rock.
