Tony Malaby's Double Heart
The saxophonist is the epitome of a fanciful freebopper, steadily launching new groups to suit his imaginative muse. This three-night stretch should provide a vivid portrait. His piano and drums trio can be expansive, restless and thorny. His Double Heart quartet is a two-bass affair that occasionally brings a rambunctious chamber vibe to the fore. And on the new Voladores, his double-drummer Apparitions crew floats through the air with the greatest of ease, with John Hollenbeck and Tom Rainey feathering their way through stormy weather patterns while the boss and his horn salt the clouds.
