Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion was named album of the year by everyone from Spin to Pitchfork to Entertainment Weekly to our very own Pazz & Jop Critics' Poll. What better way to follow up their Sgt. Pepper's moment than with the dub-punk trance-indie version of Magical Mystery Tour? Tonight, the three or four members of Animal Collective and director Danny Perez present the New York premiere of Oddsac, their 53-minute "visual album," pretty much something only a band with this amount of profile and critical acclaim could get away with. What little bits of Oddsac have been floating around the Internet look like a mix of Matthew Barney's colorful dreamscapes, Stan Brakhage's epileptic free-form flutters, the haunting tracking goofs of '80s VHS horror flicks, and the quixotic Flaming Lips attitude of "Fuck it, let's make a movie!" Either way, its flickering psychedelic gibberish basically ensure somebody's gonna have a seizure. March 2 is sold out; tickets may still be available for March 3.
Tue., March 2, 6:30 & 8:30 p.m.; Wed., March 3, 6:30 & 8:30 p.m., 2010
