Not since Stumpy Brown, the diminutive bass trombone player in Les Brown's Band of Renown who used a string to fully extend the unwieldy instrument, has a trombonist made a name for himself with such an ostensibly uncommercial moniker. Still, Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews has done it, fusing the tradition he inherited growing up in the Treme neighborhood of New Orleans with a hip-hop sensibility. His most recent album, For True, revels in the carnal possession and gutbucket stomp of that swashbuckling sound. With Dayna Kurtz and the Brooklyn Steppers.
