True Heart Susie
Dir D.W.Griffith (1919).
One of the modest program pictures Griffith made for Paramount-Artcraft about the same time as his more famous Broken Blossoms, this simple somewhat Dickensian story takes place in a country village before the Jazz Age and stars Lillian Gish as the innocent and self-sacrificing heroine who grows through tragedy from a happy adolescent to a mature woman. Old-fashioned hokum, perhaps, but luminous and quite beautiful.
Wednesdays-Fridays, 1:30 p.m. Starts: Jan. 6. Continues through Jan. 8, 2010
