Two Stage Sisters

Dir. Xie Jin (1964). One of the last movies to come out of Shanghai before the Cultural Revolution, Xie Jin’s masterpiece richly evokes the 1935-50 period. The eponymous sisters are the exploited ingénues of an itinerant acting troupe who become stars under the Japanese occupation—as one sister moves left and the other right, the parallels with Chen Kaige’s 1992 Farewell My Concubine are obvious.
