Chicago six-piece Umphrey's McGee is the superclean Lego architects of improvised rock. Impeccable playing and pristine arrangements often birthed on the fly are the signature moves of a band that's less about individual improvisation than about collectively exploring the vast history of domestic rock riffage. Umph's upcoming album, Death By Stereo, takes the oft-maligned indulgences of the '80s as raw material for very knowingand very musicalprogressivism. Don't expect to hear the same thing twice over this run's four nights, eight sets, and one extra pre-show foray into fan-guided improvisation.
