And you think being a mother today is rough? Just look at poor Demeter, goddess of the harvest, who tried to hide her young beautiful daughter, Persephone, away from all the deities, only to have Hades, king of the underworld, come up from the ground and abduct her. This sorrowful myth of a grieving mother and lost daughter now gets the experimental Ridge Theater treatment when it comes to BAM as a part of its Next Wave Festival. The 90-minute Persephone, a collaboration with composer Ben Neill, singer-actor Mimi Goese, and Tony-winning playwright Warren Leight, will be staged as if a 19th-century theater company were putting on the myth, with projections, instrumental music, and songs. For those who love an adorable movie star with their theater, Julia Stiles (see: The Prince and Me, The Bourne Identity) stars in the title role.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m. Starts: Oct. 26. Continues through Oct. 30, 2010
