No sense in filing a lawsuit unless you've found a wildly successful moneybags target, right? Vampire Weekend's Contra (and its newly litigious cover model) was the year's indie Billboard #1 coup until the Arcade Fire came along. The sophomore album from the Columbia University cardigan-rockers isn't as unilaterally charming and polite as their 2008 debut, but its epileptic lead single, "Cousins," is moderately bizarre, totally endearing, and by far the most legitimately rock and roll thing they've released yet. (That, you will note, was an Oxford comma.)
