"Jazz vibraphonist" is as unexpected a tagline as any on the fusion scene today, but Gary Burton and his four mallets need just a moment to remove all doubt. The Indiana player is an innovator of the dual-stick technique, which allows his groove to remain both pliable and deep, and has tickled the tiles alongside B.B. King, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, and more. Also an accomplished marimba artist, Burton is a multiple Grammy winner, revered music educator (he spent three decades at the Berklee College of Music), and all-around formidable innovator, as last year's Quartet Live with Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow, and Antonio Sanchez only served to remind.
