VOICES FROM THE EDGE
Since founding Akashic Books in 1997 with the slogan "reverse-gentrification of the literary world," Girls Against Boys bassist Johnny Temple has published some of the best boundary-pushing writers of urban literature and political nonfiction as well as the rebel voices of Akashic's imprint Punk Planet Books. Tonight, pick up some stimulating summer reading from the Brooklyn-based company at the Center for Fiction's Celebration of Akashic Books. Temple and filmmaker Melvin Van Peebles (Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song) hosts this program of readings by authors Cristina Garcia (Dreaming in Cuban), Arthur Nersesian (Mesopotamia), Bernice McFadden (Glorious), and former Guided by Voices bassist James Greer (Artificial Light). Joseph Mattson (Eat Hell) is the special guest.
