Whenever Chan Marshall, the airy voice behind Cat Power, releases a new album of her signature confessional indie rock, it’s usually greeted with declarations that it is the most personal record to date. That’s partially because Marshall, a onetime East Village denizen, lets her surroundings influence her. She recorded her latest LP, Sun, in Los Angeles, Miami, and Paris over the expanse of three years, so it’s a funny thing then that one of the LP’s most heartrending songs is titled “Manhattan.” In it, she sings, “All the friends we used to know ain’t coming back,” and she has alluded that the song’s lyrics have something to do with her need to break free of the city.
