While the city might feel more sleepy than usual, early January is no time to hibernate thanks to two great performance festivals for offbeat and avant-garde artists: the Under the Radar and COIL. For its 10th edition, the lineup for UTR (presented by the Public Theater and running from January 8 to 19) couldn’t be better. British poet and rapper Kate Tempest, captivating storyteller Edgar Oliver, actor-comedian John Hodgman, and Obie-winner Roger Guenveur Smith are just a few of the 16 acts on the bill. Over at COIL (presented by P.S. 122 and running from January 3 to February 1), highlights include Tina Satter’s House of Dance, Okwui Okpokwasili’s Bronx Gothic, and the New York premiere of Mac Wellman’s Muazzez. And mark your calendars for January 12 when COIL throws its Red + White Party, a night of table tennis and dancing at SPiN New York. Visit undertheradarfestival.com and ps122.org/coil-2014 for more details.
Mondays-Sundays, 8 p.m. Starts: Jan. 3. Continues through Feb. 1, 2014
