The fall social season came blazingly to life earlier this month,
when that venerable dowager, Saks Fifth Avenue, gussied up her staid interior
with Union Jacks and transgendered constables and hosted a “British
Invasion” extravaganza. Fashion fiends who had been hibernating in
the Hamptons all summer roared back to town just in time to rub shoulders with
raggedy Brits, stateless glitterati, and the Downtown demimonde. —Lynn Yaeger
