Regarding Jim Carrey’s recent casting in a live-action remake of How the Grinch Stole Christmas: Carrey may be the most Seussian movie star Hollywood’s ever seen, but is he right for the grouchy green one? Isn’t he a more likely Cat in the Hat? And how is that book going to translate, exactly? Will Christina Ricci be Suzie Lou Who? In case it starts a run on the Seuss library, here are some casting notes:
The Lorax: Wizened, stumpy, naked, and Moses-like, this most idealistic of Seuss characters would be a plum pick for Harvey Keitel, with Sean Connery voicing in for the never-seen Onceler.
Horton: Whether hatching an egg or hearing a Who, playing a stupid elephant is a stretch for any actor, and would’ve been a Chris Farley natural had he hung in there. John Goodman?
The Cat in the Hat: If Carrey can’t fill this anarchist’s shoes, and the Fates bless us by overlooking Robin Williams, what about Chris Rock?
Yertle the Turtle: This reptilian demagogue doesn’t have many dimensions, so maybe Kevin Spacey could fill him out. The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins: Dull as he is, Cubbins himself could and probably will be some post-Macauley brat, but the irascible King Derwin is clearly the new Anthony Hopkins, Ian McKellen.
Green Eggs and Ham: The pas de deux between Sam-I-Am and the unnamed cholesterol pusher, so obviously a parable about the struggle between capitalist and socialist ideologies, would be the logical next step for Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo.
