Class Antagonism

by

Last week, the Supreme Court handed down a narrow 5-4 decision holding schools responsible for student-on-student sexual harassment. Teased much?

Florence Dufore

Age: 27

Resides: Upper West Side

Occupation: Receptionist

Do you agree with the Supreme Court decision? Yes. If that happened to my daughter I would sue.

Did you ever get harassed in school? Yes. Sexually harassed every day. But I was too afraid to say so.

At what age should kids be held responsible? About nine or 10, they should get therapy. But once they’re 15, 16, they know right and wrong.

Angela Davenport

Age: 22

Resides: Village

Occupation: Student

Do you agree with the Supreme Court decision? No. Actions of children should not be a problem of the school itself. Girls don’t know how to deal with it sometimes. They just
have to stand up for themselves.

Did you ever get harassed in school? Hasn’t everybody?

At what age should kids be held responsible? Around 14, 15.

Dimitri Rhem

Age: 30

Resides: East New York

Occupation: Merchandising

Do you agree with the Supreme Court decision? Of course.

Did you ever get harassed in school? Yeah, all the time. P.S. 214, years ago. But the level of harassment back then compared to now, these days it’s more violent.

At what age should kids be held responsible? The age that kids start challenging adults.

Margaret Norton

Age: 46

Resides: Fort Greene

Occupation: Professor

Do you agree with the Supreme Court decision? I don’t. Parents really have to be accountable. Schools already have too much to manage.

Did you ever get harassed in school? Not in school . . . I might’ve been a harasser in the fifth, sixth grade. My girlfriends and I would sometimes follow guys around, call them at home, sometimes try to pick fights. What happened was, their parents called my parents and told them they didn’t like it. I got busted.

At what age should kids be held responsible?
If you’re saying legal action, then I don’t
know what age.

Trena Ward

Age: 26

Resides: Bronx

Occupation: Social worker

Do you agree with the Supreme Court decision? In part. If you just blame the school, it takes away the job of the parent.

Did you ever get harassed in school? No. Back then when something happened I didn’t consider it harassment. If a little boy grabbed my butt back then, no. But today I could sue someone for that.

At what age should kids be held responsible? Around seven.

Wilson Abarca

Age: 17

Resides: Flushing

Occupation: Student

Do you agree with the Supreme Court decision? Yeah. They should be liable. The school should’ve done something about it.

Did you ever get harassed in school? Yeah, like the way I look, everybody makes fun of me.
I just don’t listen to them. Couldn’t give two shits about them. One time they tied me up in handcuffs and jumped me. I told my dad and he said that I let them.

At what age should kids be held responsible?
By the time they’re like 16.

Alethea Harris

Age: 38

Resides: Queens

Occupation: Supervisor

Do you agree with the Supreme Court decision? Yes. The school should be held accountable. But also the parents.

Did you ever get harassed in school? Oh, please! All the time! I was sexually harassed at school in the fourth grade. But there was nothing in place back then to combat it.

At what age should kids be held responsible? Nine or 10.

Timothy Murphy

Age: 31

Resides: East Village

Occupation: Photographer

Do you agree with the Supreme Court decision? If the violation to the student was serious enough and the school was made aware, then yes. But that’s dangerous because it opens up a plethora of lawsuits. Now anyone can say their kid was harassed and sue.

Did you ever get harassed in school? Everybody’s harassed a little bit. But what
did bother me is that sometimes teachers and administrators were more tolerant of the actions of a popular kid.

At what age should kids be held responsible?
I can’t give you an age.
