The latest wacko campaign rumor circulating from Shrub haters goes like this: Convinced that VP nominee Dick Cheney spells disaster for George W. Bush’s floundering campaign, top Republicans are ready to force a desperate step. A few weeks prior to the election, according to this ever-so-unsubstantiated bit of scuttlebutt, Cheney will suddenly withdraw, citing a trumped-up heart problem or some other “threat to his health.” That surprise move would open the door for either John McCain or Colin Powell to jump in and save the party.
Foes of Shrub, especially members of the lefty intelligentsia, are circulating the story on e-mail, in an effort to foil the GOP’s purported plans.
